About
Dr. James Lee is a technical advisor specializing in AI/ML architecture, data infrastructure, and engineering team building. With a PhD in Machine Learning from Stanford and 12 years of experience shipping AI products at Google, Apple, and two AI startups, James helps founders make critical technical decisions during the 0-to-1 phase.
At Google, James led the ML infrastructure team for Google Photos' face recognition system (2B+ users). At Apple, he built core ML models for Siri's voice recognition improvements. He then co-founded MLOps.ai (acquired by DataRobot) and served as CTO at AI medical imaging startup VisionMD through Series B.
James's advisory practice focuses on: AI/ML architecture reviews and roadmap planning, technical due diligence for investors, engineering team structure and hiring (especially first 10 engineers), build vs. buy decisions for ML infrastructure, and technical founder coaching. He works with 4-6 companies at a time, typically seed through Series A.
His approach involves deep technical work: code reviews, architecture sessions with engineering teams, interview process design, and vendor evaluation. He is not a hands-off strategy advisor - he will get into the codebase and pair program when needed.
Typical clients include: AI-first startups building core ML products, traditional software companies adding AI capabilities, and investors needing technical due diligence on AI investments. Recent engagements include MedAI (Series A technical roadmap), SalesPredict (ML architecture redesign), and VoiceBot (hiring first ML team).
James charges monthly retainers for ongoing advisory (10-15 hours/month) or project-based fees for technical assessments. He maintains active research interests and publishes papers on applied ML. Based in Seattle, he holds affiliate positions at Stanford AI Lab and UW CSE.
