About
David Okonkwo is Founding Partner at Pan-African Ventures, a $75M fund investing in African fintech, e-commerce, and logistics startups. With investments in both African-based companies and diaspora-founded startups serving African markets, David bridges the gap between Silicon Valley capital and African innovation.
Born in Lagos and educated in the UK and US, David brings a unique cross-cultural perspective to venture investing. He spent eight years at McKinsey & Company, including leading the Lagos office's technology practice, before transitioning to venture capital. He then co-founded PayStack Nigeria (before the PayStack/Stripe deal) and served as an early advisor to Flutterwave.
David writes checks of $250K-$1.5M in seed and Series A rounds, with a particular focus on: payments and financial infrastructure, e-commerce enablement, logistics and supply chain, and B2B marketplaces serving African businesses. He's equally interested in African founders building locally and diaspora founders building for the continent.
His investment approach emphasizes unit economics, distribution advantages, and regulatory navigation. He spends significant time in Lagos, Nairobi, and Cape Town, giving him real-time visibility into market dynamics across the continent's key tech hubs.
Current portfolio includes seven companies: AfriPay (payments infrastructure), LogiTrack (last-mile logistics), Farmland Exchange (agri-marketplace), and four others in stealth. He serves on three boards and maintains active advisory relationships across the portfolio.
David is passionate about building the African tech ecosystem and regularly speaks at Africa Tech Summit, AfricArena, and TechCabal events. He mentors emerging fund managers through the African Venture Capital Association.
A graduate of Oxford (PPE) and Harvard Business School, David splits his time between London, Lagos, and San Francisco.
